Bookworm shout-out!

Just like a proud parent:

Library is #2 in National Rankings
For the third year in a row, Multnomah County Library is ranked #2 in comprehensive rankings of U.S. public libraries serving populations over 500,000.

The latest edition of Hennen's American Public Library Ratings (HAPLR) evaluates libraries based on a set of measures such as expenditures, circulation per capita and the percentage of the library's budget that is spent on books and materials. These input and output measures are weighted in their relative importance to quality library service. The 2006 rankings are based on data from 2004.

According to HAPLR, the top five libraries serving populations of 500,000 and more are:
Cuyahoga County Public Library (Ohio)
Multnomah County Library (Oregon)
Columbus Metropolitan Library (Ohio)
Denver Public Library (Colorado)
Baltimore County Public Library (Maryland)

I figure they were #2 because the Decemberists paid their debt to society by paying their overdue fines at the Multnomah County Library.
